A- Unfortunately we only have one Starbucks in my city (crazy…I know!) and it’s about 15 minutes from my house. So when I do get there I love their Awake Tea with a touch of cinnamon or the Chai Latte! Mmm….
Q - Tell us a little about you & So Sweet Design Studio ?
I’m a mom to a beautiful little girl (Avery – 21 months) and married to my amazing husband Chris for a little over 6 years. We reside in Sudbury, Ontario (Canada) and love going on adventures and making memories as a family of 3!
So Sweet Design Studio (SSDS) was launched in February of this year (Etsy Shop) and is my second baby! I took a leap of faith and just put myself and my designs out there for the public to see. I’m continuing to learn the “ins and outs” of owning/running a small business, while juggling my role as a wife and mother, as well as my full-time job.
Q - Is this business something you really planned for or did it fall into your lap?
I’ve always wanted to own my own business, so I would have to say it is something that I have really hoped/planned for. I wish I could focus my attention on SSDS full-time, so that is my hope one day…until then lots of late night designing and promoting to reach my goal/dream! As the saying goes…”Everything starts with a dream!”
Q - Tell me a little bit about your inspiration for SSDS?
So Sweet started after my daughter’s 1st Birthday – I really enjoyed designing her party decor and I had done additional design work (posters, party invitations, etc) for friends and family, so I thought I would put my love of design and party planning to use!
Q - What has been your best/most validating moment with the business so far?
I’d have to say, when clients send me a photo of my designs in use (whether it’s of their child with their 1st Birthday Chalkboard or an item displayed in their home) – it makes me so happy to see others enjoying my work! I love designing, so it really validates for me that I can continue doing what I love.
Q - If you were a holiday pie what would you be? and why?
I can only choose just one? I’d have to say Blueberry
…so sweet and a family favourite!
Q- What are some other small businesses that you support? I love supporting other small businesses. A few of my favourites are:
Bows/Accessories: Erinn & Company and fellow Canadian shop – Urban Cowgirl Co.
Baby Items: My Littlest 1 (ig: @my_littlest_1) and Solchanshop (ig: @solchanshop)
Party Decor - Lisa Frank Parties (ig: lisafrankparties) and Unpolished & Pretty (ig: unpolishedandpretty)
Q - What is your of your guilty pleasure tv show?
Eek! When I’m working on designs I normally have the tv on in the background and lately I have been watching/listening to the Real Housewives of Orange County and this past summer I was all for Big Brother (Canada and US)!
Q- What are 2 things you have learned from opening a small business?
I’ve learned a ton…but the 2 main things would be…
1) Target Marketing is K E Y! Without this you are like a fish out of water.
2) It takes a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get a business up and running and it’s not easy to accomplish – there is so much choice out there! I would love for all small businesses to support one another – I don’t believe it’s a competition!
Q - How are you getting the word out about So Sweet Design Studio?
Currently I’m mainly focusing on promoting So Sweet Design Studio via social media outlets (Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest), as the items in my shop are digital prints.
I’m a mom to a very energetic little girl - who is a very early riser…4-5am! So once we are up, we get ready for our day. I also work an 8-4 job in administration at our city hospital, so Avery goes to daycare. Once my work is done for the day, I’m in full-time Mommy mode until Avery goes to bed (between 7-8pm). The later evening is when I get a chance to focus on So Sweet Design Studio and pour all my creativity and energy into it until it’s time to head to bed.
Q - How do you come up with your products?
The designs in my shop are inspired by my day to day activities – whether it be from a book or tv show or magazine! One of my favourite parts of this job is working with clients and being able to bring their ideas and visions to life.
Q - Crunchy or Creamy peanut butter?
Creamy all the way!
My 1st Birthday Chalkboards – especially the Winter Wonderland and Polka dot themed ones!
Q - Any exciting things in the works?
Over the next year, my hopes/goals are to add even more options to my shop (ie. wedding invitations, save the date prints, full party decoration packages, etc).
I’m most excited for the Holiday season to being and I’m currently designing some new items for Christmas!
Keep checking back to our Instagram and Etsy Shop – new items are constantly being added!
